RPSA Best Practice for Spray-Foam Installation

Introduction

The Retrofit Spray-Foam Suppliers Association (RPSA) represents the UK’s leading polyurethane-foam manufacturers. In June 2022, RPSA issued an alert concerning retrofit installations that fell below industry standards. Following enhanced training programmes and rigorous site audits, RPSA withdrew that alert in March 2023 and published a comprehensive best-practice guide affirming that correctly installed spray foam reliably delivers its intended thermal and moisture-control benefits.

RPSA Timeline

  • June 2022
RPSA raises concerns over a small number of retrofit projects where installers had not followed manufacturer protocols.
  • Late 2022
Manufacturers collaborate on mandatory training, on-site quality checks and updated product data.
  • March 2023
Original alert withdrawn; RPSA publishes its detailed best-practice guide for homeowners and professionals.

Homeowner’s Best-Practice Checklist

  1. Manufacturer-Led Training
Confirm your installer has completed the latest foam-specific courses covering correct mixing ratios, substrate prep and spray techniques.
  2. On-Site Moisture Testing
Hygrometer readings should be taken immediately before and after application, with results recorded against UK hygrothermal standards.
  3. Thermal-Imaging Verification
Infrared scans must demonstrate uninterrupted coverage—any cold-bridges require immediate rectification.
  4. Complete Handover Documentation
Retain Safety Data Sheets (SDS), product data sheets, warranty certificates and a step-by-step maintenance guide.
